What's Invloved?
Stump grinding removes a tree stump by mechanically grinding it down below ground level. A rotating cutting wheel works through the stump and surface roots, reducing everything to wood chip. The resulting material can be used as mulch or removed from site. The ground is then level and ready to turf, replant or pave over.
It is faster, less disruptive and significantly cheaper than full stump excavation. There is no heavy digging, no damage to surrounding lawn, and no large machinery required for access. Most domestic stumps are completed in under an hour.
Stump Grinding
Stump grinding is more straightforward than most tree work, but there are a few things worth knowing before the job starts. Here's what it involves, who needs it, and what to expect on the day.
Stump grinding uses a rotating cutting wheel to grind the stump and surface roots down below ground level. The process leaves a depression filled with wood chip and fine debris, which can be used as mulch, mixed back into the soil, or removed from site. The area is left level and suitable for replanting, turfing or building over.

Any time after a tree has been felled. There is no need to wait. Stumps can be ground immediately after felling or years later. If you are planning to turf, pave or build over the area, the stump needs to come out before any groundwork starts. If the stump is showing signs of regrowth, early grinding prevents the root system from re-establishing.
Stump grinders are high-powered machines with fast-rotating cutting teeth. Incorrect operation causes serious injury, and debris is ejected at speed during the process. Beyond the safety aspect, grinding to the right depth matters. Too shallow and roots continue to grow. Too deep and you risk damaging underground services. A stump left in the ground is not a neutral problem. It creates issues that compound over time. Here's what typically happens when a stump is left untreated.
Most tree species send up new shoots from the stump and root system within weeks of felling. Left unchecked, regrowth becomes a persistent problem that requires repeated cutting back and eventually more work to resolve than the original stump removal would have.
Decaying stumps are a primary host for honey fungus, one of the most destructive plant diseases in UK gardens. Once established it spreads through the soil via root-like structures and kills healthy plants, shrubs and trees across the garden.
The root system of a felled tree continues to extend for years. Roots lift paving, crack driveways, block drainage systems and damage neighbouring structures. The longer the stump is left, the more established the root spread becomes.
As the stump and roots decay they leave voids in the soil. These collapse over time, creating uneven, sunken ground that is a trip hazard and makes the area difficult to maintain or build on.
A stump in the middle of a lawn, driveway or border prevents the area from being properly reclaimed. Turfing, paving or replanting over an untreated stump leads to further problems as the wood beneath continues to break down.
A fresh stump grinds faster and more cleanly than one that has been left for years. Hardwoods in particular become significantly denser and more difficult to grind as they age. Earlier removal is usually cheaper removal.
What's included?
Every stump grinding job starts with a site assessment. We check access, locate any underground services, confirm the grinding depth required, and provide a written quote. Work does not begin until everything is agreed.
We check the stump size, species, access route for the grinder, and proximity to fences, walls and underground services before any work begins.
We identify any buried cables, pipes or drainage runs near the stump before grinding starts. If services are too close we adjust the approach accordingly.
The stump is ground down to a minimum of 150mm below the surface as standard, deeper where replanting or construction is planned. All surface roots within reach of the machine are ground out.
The resulting wood chip is left on site to backfill the depression, used as mulch, or removed entirely. Your preference noted at the time of quote.
The area is raked level on completion. For turf or seed, we advise on topsoil requirements before we go.
Where regrowth is a concern or honey fungus is present, we advise on appropriate treatment options to prevent re-establishment.
