Hedge trimming involves cutting, shaping or reducing hedges to maintain their appearance, health and function. Regular trimming encourages dense growth and prevents bare patches. Reductions bring overgrown hedges back under control. Removal clears hedges that are no longer needed or have become too established to manage. For most hedges, once or twice a year is enough to keep them looking right and growing well. Fast-growing conifers often need cutting more frequently during the growing season. If a hedge has significantly overgrown, a reduction can be done at the right time of year to bring it back into shape. Cutting Leylandii back into the brown, dead zone is irreversible — the hedge will not regrow from that point. Yew and other formal hedges need precise, even cutting to maintain their shape. Getting the timing wrong on the wrong species causes damage that cannot be undone. Neglected hedges don't look bad overnight. They spread slowly, shade out more each year, and get harder to bring back. Here's what typically happens when a hedge is left to grow unchecked.
Unmanaged hedges develop thick, heavy stems with an unbalanced internal structure. Over time sections split, collapse outward or break away entirely, particularly after wind or heavy snow.
Leylandii grows up to a metre a year. A hedge that looks manageable in spring is significantly taller by autumn. The longer it is left, the larger the reduction job becomes, and your options get more limited as the hedge matures.
Hedges that block light to a neighbour’s property can trigger formal complaints under the Anti-social Behaviour Act. High hedges are a specific legal category and your local council can issue enforcement notices requiring reduction at your cost.
A hedge taller or wider than it needs to be casts more shade than intended, damaging lawn and border plants alongside it. Dense, unmanaged internal growth also reduces air circulation and encourages disease within the hedge itself.
Cutting back into the brown, dead zone on a conifer hedge cannot be reversed. The hedge will not regrow from that point. Timing and knowing where to cut matters more with hedges than most people realise.
