Tree pruning is the selective removal of branches to improve a tree’s health, structure, safety or appearance. It covers a wide range of work, from formative pruning of young trees to deadwood removal, crown lifting, and restorative work on trees that have been left or pruned badly in the past.
Done correctly, pruning extends the life of a tree, reduces the risk it poses to people and property, and keeps it in good condition for years before the next visit is needed. Done badly, it shortens a tree’s life and creates new problems. Topping, lopping and stub-cutting are common examples of poor practice that cause rot, structural failure and a flush of weakly-attached regrowth.

Tree pruning is the selective removal of branches to improve health, structure, light penetration, airflow, safety or appearance. It includes formative pruning of young trees, crown lifting, deadwood removal, and restorative work on trees that have been neglected or previously pruned incorrectly. Every cut is made at the natural branch collar to allow the tree to seal the wound properly.

Estate managers with avenue or amenity trees needing ongoing management. And anyone who has had their tree pruned badly before and wants the damage addressed over time.
Most broadleaved trees are best pruned between late autumn and early spring when they are dormant. Some species require summer pruning to reduce disease risk, including cherries, plums and magnolias. Deadwood and broken branches can be removed at any time of year. If you are unsure, we will advise on the right timing for your species during the site visit.
Pruning has a direct impact on a tree’s long-term health and structural integrity. Incorrect cuts, poor timing or removing too much in a single season all cause lasting damage. Topping and heavy lopping are still common, and the results are predictable, rapid decay, weakly-attached regrowth and a tree that becomes a liability rather than an asset. NPTC-qualified arborists work to BS 3998, which sets out the correct methods, timing and limits for every type of pruning work.
Poor pruning does not fix itself. The damage compounds over time, and the problems it creates become harder and more expensive to address. Here's what typically happens when pruning is skipped or done badly.
Cutting branches back to arbitrary points rather than natural collar positions removes the tree’s ability to seal its wounds. Decay enters through every cut and spreads inward. The flush of water sprouts that follows is weakly attached and fails in wind.
Branches cut too far from the collar leave a dead stub the tree cannot seal. Decay fungi establish in the stub and spread back into the main stem. What starts as a pruning error becomes a structural problem in the trunk.
Taking more than 25% of the canopy in a single season severely stresses a mature tree. Stressed trees are more vulnerable to fungal disease, less able to recover from further damage, and more likely to produce weakly-attached regrowth.
Pruning certain species at the wrong time of year creates an open invitation for disease. Cherries and plums pruned in winter are highly susceptible to silver leaf. Oaks pruned in summer face increased risk of oak wilt. Timing is not a detail, it is part of the job.
Crossing branches, competing leaders and overextended limbs that are not addressed early become significant liabilities in mature trees. Problems that take minutes to correct in a young tree can require major remedial work, or removal, once the tree is established.
Unauthorised pruning of a protected tree carries a fine of up to £20,000 per tree. White’s check for Tree Preservation Orders and conservation area restrictions before any work begins.
